T1 and Related Dedicated Services
Frame Relay
Frame relay is a service designed for cost-efficient data transmission for intermittent traffic between local area networks (LANs) and between end-points in a wide area network (WAN). This network provides a permanent virtual circuit, which means that you see a continuous, dedicated connection without having to pay for a full-time leased line. You can select levels of service depending on your network needs, prioritizing some frames and making other less important. Frame relay requires less maintenance, hardware and upkeep than traditional private-line data communications services for businesses with more than four locations. Frame relay complements and provides a mid-range service between DS0, which offers bandwidth at 64Kbps, and ATM, which operates similar to frame relay but at speeds of 155Mbps or 622Mbps.

ATM
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is a dedicated connection switching technology that organizes digital data (voice, data, and video) into 53-byte cell units and transmits them over a physical medium using digital signal technology. Because ATM is designed to be easily implemented by hardware, rather than software, faster processing and switch speeds are possible. The prespecified rates are either 155Mbps or 622Mbps. Speeds on ATM networks can reach 10Gbps.

DS0
DS0 refers to one channel of a T1 line or T3 circuit. DS0 is the base for the digital signal X series and operates at 64Kbps.

Dedicated Internet Access
A DS1 that can provide a customer various bandwidths to the Internet at speeds up to 1.54Mbps.

T1 and T3
The T1 (DS1) is the most commonly used digital line in North America. It has become the standard for large organizations that need high-capacity Internet connections for applications such as large public FTP, web sites, gopher servers, large image or video files and CAD/CAM file transfers. A T1 line has the capacity for 24 voice, data, and video channels. T1 lines use copper wire and span distances within and between major metropolitan areas. The T-carrier system is fully digital, using pulse code modulation and time-division multiplexing. T1 Point to Point, linking two locations with a DS0 or a DS1 together, is another option available for critical communications. T3 service is 28 T1 circuits bundled together.

OC3 to OC192
Growing demand for Internet access and high bandwidth applications has shifted many companies from T1 lines to optical data transmissions. An OC3 synchronous optical network transmits digital signals on optical fiber at speeds of 155Mbps. OC12 is 622Mbps, OC24 is 1.2Gbps, OC48 is 2.4Gbps and OC192 is 10Gbps. These lines are ideal for data transport and the end result is a simple, cost-effective means of carrying traffic such as voice, ATM, IP and SONET on a clear, high-bandwidth line. OC services are high-end point-to-point data transport with some attractive benefits - quick time to market, scalability and lower costs. It also offers the benefit of multi-vendor interoperability.
